Kizhi Herbal Balls

Kizhi Herbal balls.

I am very excited to be introduced the Kizhi herbal balls into our “add on treatments” here at Massage in Wanaka. After studying Ayurveda in India over 10 years ago in 2010. I have incorporated this wonderful 5000 year old medicine into many of my treatments here at the Spa as well as my everyday life. The knowledge I obtained has been life changing and I am forever grateful for having the chance to learn about this incrediable medicine.  I still think about those days in India. I also worked as an International examiner for C.I.D.E.S.C.O in India after my course. Which was perfect timing as most of the students presented what I had just learnt.  I would love to one day be able to offer more of the specialized  treatments (watch this space.). So for now I am very happy to have these an offer, it is considered one of the most popular and effective treatments in Ayurveda.

In 2019, my final year of my Herbal Medicine studies here in Otago, with the world renowned Isla Burges. (Yes, I never want to stop learning and growing. There is so much to know).  My final project was to present the Kizhi herbal balls, incorporating my Ayurvedic knowledge with my herbal medicine and making use of all my knowledge of both these very ancient and wise wisdoms of self healing.

Using my knowledge of our local herbs and adapting them to suit the Kizhi Herbal balls of Ayurveda.  (Most of the herbs in India we don’t find here).  But the wonderful thing about herbs is they don’t have just one property but many, I also believe nature gives us what we need in each area and country.  I have specialised in collecting herbs that  grow in the wild. The harsh climate of Otago means that these herbs struggle to survive and therefore are more potent and powerful than their cultured varieties. (Wild thyme is 10 times more potent than garden thyme). I know where to find them, far from pollution,  car fumes and nasty pesticides. I collect them myself, often with my partner. (He can pick much faster than me).  When the seasons are right, drying  them properly in special drying racks, unlike many of the herbs we use in New Zealand. (Sadly, I see most come from other places in the world and we have no idea who or how they were picked or where from).

I have chosen herbs that work with the circulation, nervous system and muscles. They are designed to relive tension, increase the blood and lymphatic flow and relax the muscles. They are also especially good on muscular aches and pains, painful joints, rheumatic problems and osteoarthritis. The herbs I have chosen are: wild kanuka (tea tree), wild St Johns wort, (hypericum perforatum) rosemary, (Rosmarimus officinalis) and wild thyme (Thymus vulgaris). I also add grated coconut, lemon slices and rocksalt as I was taught in India.

The heated kizhi herbal balls are either heated in coconut oil or sesame  oil. Depending on the season and your dosha. We will send a consultation form, for you to fill out for you to find out your dosha, when you book the Kizhi herbal balls.

The treatment is another 15 minutes at the end of the massage and is an extra $60.
